YES or No? In or Out?

These are the questions the media throws at us on a daily basis on a variety of strategic matters. It is all so perplexing we often don’t know what to think.
In our line of business there are , however, more pressing matters. To have a fringe or not to have a fringe? Should it be a heavy blunt cut or a soft asymmetric flowing fringe? And this is only one of  the burning issues we are faced with on a daily basis.
Fashion is a funny old thing really, here today and gone tomorrow but in our shops we try and suggest and act in the best interests of the individual.
IGORA ROYAL Nude Tones
The Spring/Summer 2016 edit from our guru Schwarzkopf has been launched and we are loving the soft, earthy, nude tones which is the biggest trend in hair colouring. Or perhaps you are an urban creative in which case you will love the  the new Igora Colorworx. Bright, bold and vibrant ranging from the mermaid hues of green, blue and purples to to the cupcake pastel blends. Anything that can be imagined can be created. Experiment a little or a lot!

In the Spotlight with Laura Duguid

In the Spotlight with Laura Duguid

AKA “Turkey Twizzler”

Laura has been the star of the show since she embarked on her hairdressing career in August.  Super organised, she keeps us all in check because we can be a messy bunch when we are slicing our way through a hair cut.

Laura loves walking (on a dry day), catching up with her favourite TV series and posting her ubiquitous selfies in her spare time, thats when she is not in the shops or soaking in the bath with a fruity cider.

On holiday Laura can be found twirling her way round a wee dancefloor in a bar in Turkey like an exotic flamingo, flapping her wings and fending off the posse of waiters and market traders who have been added to her list of faceyb friends!

My Apprenticeship at The Hair Shop with Rachel Michie

As part of Scottish Modern Apprenticeship Week we decided to give you all an insight to the life of our very own apprentice Rachel Michie.

What attracted you to a career in hairdressing?

I have always been a creative person, I love experimenting with current fashion trends and love making people look and feel good, so hairdressing was a great choice for me.

Why did you decide to go down the apprenticeship route?

I think if you are in the right salon with a variety of clients it’s possible to progress at your own pace, so I looked around to find somewhere that did a Workplace Modern Apprenticeship and that’s how my hairdressing career started at The Hair Shop.

How long have you been an apprentice?

Ive been working for Sarah Franklin at The Hair Shop for 2 years in August. I have completed my Level 2 and just started my Level 3 to complete my MA, I have achieved this by working through my SVQ course work with my workplace assessor and taking work home to complete.

What does a typical week involve for you?

In my first 2 years I have been learning basic hairdressing techniques and organising my colleagues who may require assistance. My job is to see that everyone is organised and clients are happy, so each day runs smoothly.  Now that I am studying for Level 3 I am doing more clients and gaining confidence.

What elements of the apprenticeship have you enjoyed the most?

I love doing colouring and long hair dressing because it brings out my creativity. We have recently had a day workshop in long hair dressing which allows me to experiment and push the boundaries.

What advice would you offer a young person looking to enter an apprenticeship in hairdressing?

There is a myth that hairdressing is easy, standing around and speaking, but it’s far from easy! It’s great to start at the bottom and work yourself up because that way you understand what needs to be done and the importance of doing things right. As a stylist you are selling yourself and your skills so it’s important when you are responsible for someone’s appearance to get it spot on.

What goals do you have for your career in hairdressing – and how will your apprenticeship help you achieve these?

My dream is have my own salons and expand with beauty services. I have a love with all things to do with beauty and make up, which goes hand in hand with hairdressing. I have recently began a personal blog to explore my interests in social media and how it is so useful in a business – http://www.fashionandbeautyobsessed.wordpress.com

Day 13 & 14 – A Farewell to Arms

Day 13 & 14 – A Farewell to Arms

Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd November

Well things are coming to a close and last minute assessments are being finalised and ticked off. Gifts are being exchanged and  the employers are muttering about how many students they want to take on whilst the youngsters are looking forward to their end of course trip to Nicco Park. It’s an afternoon of thrills and spills and they deserve a wee treat after all the effort they have put in in the last 6 weeks. We were mighty relieved to find it was a fraction of the price of Alton Towers thank goodness. We decided this would be the perfect time to say goodbye rather than going back to the village with them and said our sad farewells at the exit before they piled onto the school bus. I had thought that I would be able to handle all the emotion knowing they have a few more life skills and have a path to follow but it was hard.

Day 12 – The Secret Window

Day 12 – The Secret Window

Thursday 20th November

It’s always a bit of a laugh driving around and seeing some of the bill boards advertising stuff. Loved the wedding themed ‘Your love is like steel, our furniture compliments it.’  It was advertising those steel man cupboards, where no self-respecting woman would dare go. The ones that men have in the garage to keep the drain rods, sprockets and funny shaped sponges to clean those tricky places on their cars … only in this instance, in the picture, it was in a house with saris, girly blouses and heels stacked neatly one on top of the other. Maybe that’s what really happens in a man cupboard, who am I to say? I think all us women should find the household torch and sneak out and dare to have a peak….you have been warned!

Happy New Hair!

The dreary weather, back to work blues not forgetting the post christmas come down can take its toll so make a clean sweep for 2014

January always has a unique promise for what the year ahead may hold.  Its a milestone month because its a fantastic chance to pause and take stock of where our lives are at.

Instead of making a grand resolution in January try and abide by the motto “better then yesterday” We think it means improve on the past today, whether its trying something different or tweaking a daily routine, or setting realistic goals, remember its the little things that make life wonderful!

This month we are celebrating simplicity and the joy of getting back to basics. We’ve always believed small changes in your life are as enriching as big ones, so pay us a visit and find lots of inspiration advice and insider tips on how to look and feel your best.

Heres a few simple tips for keeping your tresses in tip top coniditon:

  • Have regular trims. Even if your growing it!  Long hair is typically more susceptible to breakage, split end, and to appearing thinner. If you color or highlight your hair, it is even more likely to have damage. Regular haircuts will help keep your hair strong and healthy.
  • Eat right for your hair type. As hair is made of protein, ensuring you have enough protein in your diet is crucial for making hair strong and healthy this can be found in chicken, turkey, fish, dairy products and eggs. Iron is an especially important mineral as well as Omega 3, Vitmin A, B and C. A few to look for are green vegetables such as broccoli, kale and salad greens, blueberries, avocado, seeds and nuts are all amazing.
  • Care and styling. Its essential to use the correct products for your hair type, skin type needs a specific treatment? so same goes for  hair. We highly recommend Schwarzkopf Bonacure, it will give you the personalised nourisment and protecion to last. Our superhero product is “Bonacure Sealed Ends” leave in conditioner for that extra boost of nourishment!
  • Deep Condition. Weekly treatments are great for boosting dull hair. Schwarzkopf  are the fastest absorbing hair treatments we’ve ever used! You work it into your hair after shampooing, and leave on 10-15mins or longer if you want! Then rinse and you’ll be Bonacure left with luscious locks!
  • The No Heat Challenge. We all need breaks and that includes our hair!
  • Find The Best Colour to Suit. We can advise and guide you through a colour consultation to achieve the best  combination to complement skin tone, eye colour and  fashion.
